The Weekender

I'm very pleased to announce that this autumn I'll be filming "The Weekender". It's the next feature film from Director Andrew Haigh, who recently had a huge success with his feature length docu-drama "Greek Pete".

Here's how he describes it -"On a Friday night after a drunken house party with his straight mates, Russell heads out to a gay club, alone and on the pull. Just before closing time he picks up Glen but what’s expected to be just a one-night stand becomes something else, something special. That weekend, in bars and in bedrooms, getting drunk and taking drugs, telling stories and having sex, the two men get to know each other. It is a brief encounter that will resonate throughout their lives.
The Weekender is both an honest and unapologetic love story between two guys and a film about the universal struggle for an authentic life in all its forms."

Sounds HOT, I think you'll agree.

You can follow the making of the film on its very own blog by clicking here.

New Does New Play

No, that's not me. That's Peter Nichols. He wrote plays like Day in the Death of Joe Egg and Privates on Parade. And, lucky for me, he's written a new play called Lingua Franca which I'm very excited to be leading this summer at the Finborough Theatre. It's Directed by the very talented Michael Gieleta. We open 13th July.

This is what they say about it; "Lingua Franca follows innocent abroad, Steven Flowers, as he travels from National Service in South-East Asia to 1950’s Florence. He soon finds himself working for a chaotically-run language school, together with a cosmopolitan muddle of seven foreign misfits killing their post-war nihilism in the cafés of Florence, the cradle of Renaissance high culture.
"

I'm very excited by the project and hope to see you there!

Diversity in Film Portrait

Donald Maclellan snapped this shot last week for the Diversity in Film "Pink Portraits" Collection, in partnership with the UK Film Council.

The intention is to exhibit the collection at a number of film festivals and industry events later this year. You can see the rest of the collection, which includes the wondrous Mckellen and the astounding Callow here www.diversityinfilm.org.uk.

Enjoy!

Older New

Rehearsals for "Pictures" begin on Monday - wish us all luck!

In the interim, some of you have asked for more photo's, so I've taken a walk down memory lane and picked a few choice shots to post here.

We begin almost at the beginning...

The photo above was taken on my second ever stage appearance. My first stage appearance was Tweedle-Dee (I refused to be Dum) in Alice in Wonderland at Grange Junior School - as far as I know no photo's of that exist.

I was playing Knuckles in "Bugsy Malone" at Kingsdown School. It's a role which, as you probably know, requires the regular and on demand cracking of bones in the hand (a handy trick for future Knuckles; crack small pieces of bubble wrap instead of the real thing. It creates an echoing, too-true sound without leaving a deposit in the arthritis bank for future years). The costume was donated by my dad, from his old work suits, and the moustache was cunningly created using a make-up pencil.

Dressing Room Riehl

Here's a photo that the lovely Canadian photographer Logan Riehl took one night before a performance of Prick Up Your Ears.

He's doing a whole series of actor-in-their-dressing-room type pics which you can see here www.loganriehl.com. They're a treasure trove of recent theatrical delights.

Pictures From An Exhibition

I'm currently willing my first beard into growth and getting fit as a flea for my dance world debut at Sadler's Wells in April. The show will be my third collaboration with Dan Kramer. It's all about Modest Mussorgsky, the Russian composer, drunkard and romantic. (Mussorgsky wiki).

It's Directed by Dan, choreographed by Frauke Requardt and the text is by the poet James Fenton.

Click here for the Sadler's Wells website.

Metamorphosis Wraps

Shooting for Kafka's Metamorphosis has now wrapped. Here's a picture I took on our last full day of shooting (taken moments before I ruined a take by giggling at Maureen). In the picture you have Maureen Lipman, Robert Pugh and Laura Rees - the Samsa Family.

I'll be doing some voice over for the film later in the year then my work here is done.
